My dear Postmaster General,
Thank you so much for your letter of 27th December confirming the good news which you gave me verbally at the Imperial War Museum that you have personally decided that there

 shall be a Gandhi stamp. Next August would suit us very well indeed as the actual centenary of his birth of course occurs in October, 1969 and the celebrations last a year beforehand as is always the custom in India!

I propose to tell the Prime Minister of India about your decision and also the High Commissioner in very strict confidence during the Commonwealth Premiers Conference. I shall be glad to know when I may tell the rest of the Committee officially.
