Calcutta International votes BRITISH GANDHI DESIGN BEST

Britain’s Gandhi stamp—the first United Kingdom postage stamp to commemorate an overseas leader and the first designed by an overseas artist—has won the gold medal, first prize in the International Gandhi Stamp Exhibition, held recently in India.

The 1s 6d stamp was designed by Biman Mullick, a graphic designer, book illustrator and college lecturer.

It was his first attempt at stamp designing.

In green, orange and black, the stamp shows the head of Mahatma Gandhi against a background of the Indian flag. Malta’s Gandhi stamp came second, followed closely by Bhutan and Cyprus. India’s own stamp came fifth.
