Biman Mullick, the artist of the first postage stamp of Bangladesh is being awarded with “Friends of Liberation War” of Bangladesh award

Mr. Biman Mullick is the only foreigner who designed British postage stamp in 1969. In that context, artist Biman got the invitation to design the first eight postage stamps for the new state Bangladesh. He performed the duties sincerely. Those small postage stamps played the role of an ambassador at that time. That is why, this award is being given to him. After 40 years, the government of Bangladesh has taken the decision to honor the foreign statemen, artists and institutions who helped during the Liberation War of Bangladesh. The Foreign minister of Bangladesh Dr. Dipu Moni has written an invitation letter to Biman Mullick to attend the ceremony of the honor. In reaction, 78 years old Biman Mullick told, “I have already got award earlier.” He also added, “This is not my statement. This is our daughter Sandra’s statement. The government of Bangladesh is giving me award for composing postage stamp 40 years ago. After listening to this, our daughter told, 'Father, you got the chance to design such a historical stamp. You designed it. This is an award itself.'”

This happened before she was even born. But she knows everything about it. So, she has the right to make such comment.

Overwhelmed

Biman Mullick and his family is overwhelmed after receiving the honor. He has told, “I am overwhelmed after getting this extra award. I am definitely happy. My wife Aparajita is also happy. I am feeling proud of myself. My head bowed down with respect when I got to know that the government of Bangladesh had also posthumously honored Mother Teressa and Sreemati Indira Gandhi with the same award. Inwardly I was telling myself to be really worthy of this award. I was born in unseparated India. My father Ajit Kumar was a close associate of Gandhiji in the movement of India’s independence. He was imprisoned for the ‘crime’ of disobeying the Salt Act due to the assertion of fundamental rights. In my childhood, I always used to listen to the stories of independence. I was brought up in that environment. I always considered myself as an Indian and Bengali forever. The government of Bangladesh is awarding me as ‘Foreign Friend’. I have a deep sense of unity with the East Bengal since childhood. I can never consider myself as a ‘Foreigner’. But I belong from Howrah. The ‘Ghoti’ of generations. The jealousy between Ghoti-Bengali is like the jealousy between two brothers. It was forever there. And it is indeed another form of unity.

All Indians supported the fight for freedom of Bangladesh. All the Bengalis supported that. All the people with a good sense supported that. My participation was a very natural and ordinary phenomenon. Those who sacrificed their lives and everything in the liberation war did the remarkable job. Today, I am remembering them with respect. My humble salute to those people.”

‘পুরষ্কার স্নো আতগই স্নপতিবি’ েন্ডতন প্রবেজিিা জানাতে বগতি িেতেন, ৭৮ িির িিতসর বিমান মবল্লক। আতরা িেতেন, ‘কথািা বথক আমার নি।’ আমার কনযা সান্দ্রার। িাংোতদি সরকার আমাতক চবল্লি িির আতগ রবচে িাকটিবকতির জনয পুরষ্কার বদতেন িুতন আমাতদর কনযা িেে,‘িািাএমনএকিাঐবেহাবসকস্ট্যাম্পবিজাইতনরসুত াগস্নপতিবিতে,বিজাইনকতরবিতে, স্নসিাই স্নো পুরষ্কার।’

এ বিজাইতনর িযাপারিা োর জতন্মর আতগর ঘিনা। বকন্তু এ সম্পতকে সি কথাই োরাঁ জানা। সুেরাং এমন মন্তিয করার অবধকার সান্দ্রার আতি।
