Press Release:

The International Gandhi Stamp Exhibtion, organised in active co-operation with the Indian Philatelic Society, Calcutta was declared open by His Excellency the Governor of West Bengal Mr. Shanti Swaroop Dhavan, at Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta. Mr. Ajoy Mukherjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal presided over the function. First of its kind to be held anywhere in the world, the exhibition shows beautiful Mahatma Gandhi Stamps issued in over 35 countries, their sketches, original designs, proofs and colour trials, etc. Among the participating countries, beside the Government of India, P&T Dept., are British Post Office, Cyprus, Malta, Aden, Bhutan, West Germany, Guyana, Surinam, Ireland, Congo, Cameroon, Gabon, Mauritania, Niger, Upper Volta, Tchad, Senegal, Dominica and Grenada. Others participating are Mr. Biman Mullick, Sashikant Jha, Crown Agents Stamp Bureau, Inter Governmental Philatelic Corporation, French Government Overseas Department (Theodore Champion).
